I hope you have seen the movie! It’s really good too, but the books have so much more story to go along with what you see in the movie.
The Field Guide Book 1 – The book starts off with the family moving into a very large old run down house and gives an introduction of the family consisting of twin boys Jared Simon, their sister Mallory and their mom. Jared finds the hidden attic room that Arthur Spiderwick used as his secret study and he also finds the “Field Guide” that Arthur Spiderwick wrote. They also meet Thimbletack who causes some distress to Mallory and Simon after they destroy his home, of course Jared gets blamed. My favorite thing about book one is even though Jared is blamed and is having anger issues he discovers the magic around them that no one else could see.
The Seeing Stone Book 2 – The story continues with many more and much larger creatures, Simon get kidnapped, and Jared learns how to see the creatures. I think the spitting part was really nasty but that’s because I have a very good imagination and can see it very clearly in my mind… YUCK! I guess the cat being cooked over the fire isn’t great either. My favorite part of this book is that Simon who loves animals gets to take the griffin home for his new pet.
Lucinda’s Secret Book 3 – Now the world of magical creatures expand even more. They get to visit Aunt Lucinda, she is living in a psychiatric hospital, and she tells them of her father disappearing when she was a little girl. In this book Jared is kidnapped and plays the twin card to get himself out of trouble. To me the elves in this book are creepy… My favorite thing about this book is the information gathering that happens.
The Ironwood Tree Book 4 – In this part of the story Jared sees his twin that is not Simon. Mallory is the one kidnapped this time, the boys have to enter the underground world of the dwarves to rescue her and they discover that dwarves are very good at making things. The goblins kill the dwarves and some more weird stuff happens (I don’t want to spoil the story). My favorite thing about this book is actually the things the dwarves made.
The Wrath of Mulgarath Book 5 – So there is only one more person that can get kidnapped, yes it’s their mom. She finally learns about the creatures… the hard way. The griffin helps out with the rescue, I have heard some folks complain about the baby dragons and what they do to the cows so this book does have a bit of creepy or weird or maybe scary stuff that could be considered not for the very young readers. All in all the kids have a big adventure battling monsters and saving their mom and Hogsqueal does get to eat the ogre in the end so it all turns out good. By the way Hogsqueal eating the ogre is my favorite part of the book! It is sad when Arthur Spiderwick comes back to see Lucinda then says goodbye and dies, so that is another part that might not be for young readers.
