Recently there has been a lot of talk about companies providing cloud computing resources on the internet. One of the reasons this concept has become so powerful is that more and more people are using mobile devices to get online. Often these devices are small and do not come with large hard drives that are capable of saving and storing huge amounts of data, like video, image and sound files. By using cloud computing services, however, large files may be saved on a server and merely accessed by the mobile device.

One good example of cloud computing services are photo sharing sites. These days you can probably find dozens of photo sharing sites online, if not more. Some of these sites will provide a limited amount of space for free and then charge a small monthly or annual fee for a much larger storage capacity. These sites are designed to allow you to upload your photos onto their servers, thus removing them from your hard drive. Most of the sites will offer you photo editing tools and the ability to categorize your photos. Many will also have additional tools or features. The bottom line, however, is that whenever you wish to view your photos you merely have to log in with a user name and password. You can also allow other people to view your photos depending upon the parameters you put in place.

Let’s take a moment here to point out the obvious. Before you can take advantage of cloud computing sites, it is necessary that you have a high-speed internet connection. There is no reason to try to upload photos onto a photo sharing site if you are still using a dial-up modem or have an extremely slow connection speed. Not only will it not be enjoyable, you will also find it extremely frustrating.

Another great example of a cloud computing service is Google Docs. Using this site you may keep your MS Word and Excel files on a Google server. Doing so not only frees up space on your hard drive, but more importantly gives you access to these files from whatever computer you happen to be on. So rather than having to carry the same laptop with you in order to access your files, you can save them on Google Docs and access them from a smart phone, an iPad or other tablet, a public computer in a library or hotel business center, or from literally any computer from anyplace in the world. Google Docs also makes it easy to share files with coworkers, regardless if they are sitting in the next office, or in an office on the other side of the world.

Another major force in cloud computing is Amazon Web Services. This resource not only provides vast amounts of web storage, it also provides web hosting, web back-up and high-performance computing on a pay-as-you go basis. Many people have found using the resources at AWS very helpful when launching a new product if they anticipate a huge spike in their traffic volume that may otherwise over-tax their web server. Without getting too technical, Amazon has the technology to allow you to purchase additional bandwidth, allowing your site to run more smoothly and efficiently, even when you have very heavy traffic.

There is no question that cloud computing is the wave of the future. More and more major companies, like CenturyLink and Verizon are purchasing cloud computing companies that will allow them to be positioned among the leading providers of cloud services in the months and years ahead. As the internet continues to evolve and still more people begin using mobile connections to access the world-wide-web, cloud computing services will become more and more valuable to all of us.
